A fire started early Saturday afternoon in Santa Barbara County and grew "completely out of control," according to Save Zaniboni, county fire captain. The fire briefly trapped 90 children and 50 counselors at the Circle V Ranch. The children and adults took shelter on a corner of the ranch until firefighters were able to evacuate them.
The fire also ravaged a portion of the Cachuma Lake campground, a popular destination for boating, fishing, and camping. As of Sunday, the fire was still not contained and had burned at least 4.7 square miles.
Another Santa Barbara wildfire grew to nearly 30 square miles and drove residents of 200 homes in rural Santa Maria to flee for safety. A third fire erupted and burned about four square miles, including some residential neighborhoods of Oroville, Calif., where strong dry winds carried the flames from house to house.
Record-high heat waves are also fanning the flames. CBS notes that Palm Springs, Los Angeles, and Death Valley all registered their hottest days in more than a century, with highs of respectively 122 degrees, 98 degrees, and 127 degrees. According to firefighters, this extreme heat encourages more fires.
"We are going to see an increase in calls during this peak heat," said Los Angeles Fire Captain Erik Scott.
Increased fire activity has also erupted in other parts of the southwest this past week. Wyoming suffered a blaze that expanded over three square miles. Another fire scorched 18 miles of grassland in Colorado
