On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump rescinded protections for transgender students that were put in place during the Barack Obama administration. The protections allowed students to use bathrooms corresponding with their gender identity. Many American celebrities rose up to decry the move by President Trump.
"Just seeing the news about removing laws protecting trans people. This isn't about politics. It's about human rights, and it's not okay," tweeted Ellen DeGeneres tweeted. "For anyone who feels scared or hopeless, know that we will never stop fighting for your rights."

"This is everything wrong with the administration," commented Emmy Rossum wrote. "@POTUS acts out of fear and hatred of everything he doesn't understand. #Resist."
Jackie Evancho, the 16 year old music artist that performed the National Anthem at the 2017 Presidential Inauguration in January, spoke out against the action. Evancho has a transgender sister.

"I am obviously disappointed in the @POTUS decision to send the #transgender bathroom issue to the states to decide. #sisterlove," tweeted Evancho after the Trump decision on Wednesday. "@realDonaldTrump u gave me the honor 2 sing at your inauguration. Pls give me & my sis the honor 2 meet with u 2 talk #transgender rghts."

White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, argued that Trump did the right thing to put the decision in the hands of individual states.

"It's incumbent on us to actually follow the law and to recognize that Title IX never actually talked about this," said Spicer
